PLA vs PETG Filament: Which Should You Choose?

Choosing between PLA and PETG is one of the most common decisions a 3D printer user faces. Both are popular, widely available, and work on most FDM printers — but they behave very differently. This guide breaks down exactly when to use each one, so you can get the best results from your prints.

 

PLA: The Reliable All-Rounder

  • Poor heat resistance — softens above ~60°C
  • More brittle than PETG under impact

PETG: The Tough Performer

PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) bridges the gap between easy-to-print PLA and engineering-grade filaments. It's tougher, more flexible, and significantly more heat and moisture resistant.

Strengths:

  • Much better impact resistance than PLA
  • Heat resistant up to ~80°C
  • Moisture and chemical resistant
  • Good layer adhesion — strong functional parts
  • Food-safe options available (check manufacturer specs)

Weaknesses:

  • More prone to stringing — requires tuning
  • Slightly harder to get a perfect surface finish
  • Higher print temperatures (220–250°C)
  • Can be sticky — may bond to print surfaces aggressively

Best for: Functional parts, mechanical components, outdoor prints, food containers, and anything that needs durability.
